NATURAL SCIENCE UNIT 2: OUR VITAL FUNCTIONS

There are three kingdoms of living things: the animal kingdom, the plant kingdom and the funghi kingdom.

Living things have three vital processes: nutrition, interaction and reproduction.

Some questions for you... Select to see the right answer!

  • Are dogs and cats living things? Yes, they are!
  • Are stars living things? No, they aren't.
  • Is water a living thing? No, it isn't!
  • Are humans living things? Yes, we are living things!
  • Are pencils living things? No, they aren't.
Good job!

Nutrition: it is the process by which our bodies transform the food into nutrients. Depending on what they eat, animals can be carnivores, omnivores or herbivores.

Do plants eat? What do you think they eat?

Interaction: it is the way living things relate to the environment around them. Humans can interact by moving, communicating but also with the five senses. Do you remember the five senses?

Sight, smell... can you name the other three?

Reproduction: it is the process by which living things create new living things.

Animals can be oviparous or viviparous. Humans are viviparous: we don't lay eggs!

Plants also reproduce. Seeds can create a new plant.
