Spain is bathed by the Atlantic Ocean, Cantabric Sea and Mediterranean Sea. The Atlantic is the second largest ocean in the world -it covers 25% of the Earth's surface.

There are many islands in Spain. An island is a body of land surrounded by water on all sides. The most important groups of islands in Spain are the Canary Islands (Islas Canarias) and the Balearic Islands (Islas Baleares). The Canary Islands are located in the Atlantic Ocean; the Balearic Islands are located in the Mediterranean Sea,

The most important mountain ranges in Spain are:

  • The Pyrenees. They are a natural border between Spain and France.
  • The Macizo Galaico.
  • The Sistema Ibérico.
  • The Sistema Central.
  • The Cordilleras Béticas.
In Spain there is also one big plateau called Meseta. A plateau is a land area that is higher than other areas around it. It is divided into Submeseta Norte and Submeseta Sur.

The highest mountains in Spain are:
  • Mount Teide in the Canary Islands. More than 3.700 metres high.
  • Mount Mulhacén at the Cordilleras Béticas. Almost 3.300 metres high.
